IEPs, or individual learning plans, are federally mandated documents that protect students with learning disabilities from getting lost in the shuffle. However, many parents, and students as well, don’t know how to implement them to get the best results, and therefor get lost when it comes time to actually use them. Teachers, for their part, often allow these plans to slip away in the balance of maintaining an ordered classroom. The situations are unfortunate, but it does happen. This results in lower test scores, stress in the classroom, and students who are being left behind. In order to right the scales, it’s up to teachers to take the first step and work closely with students who present IEPs.
IEPs Aren’t Lesson Plans
An IEP for a student is not something that has to be enacted for every situation. Many students soon outgrow them, and to this extent, serve as a protective layer to assist in getting an education. Teachers should of course be aware of the details in a student’s IEP, but should not be making mandatory adjustments to lesson plans. Many IEPs have common additions, such as extensions on due dates, the ability to record a lecture, or take photographs of the chalk or white board after notes have gone up. Some are a bit more extreme, requiring daily tutoring sessions before or after class with the teacher or para-professional, but these are few and far between.
If a student is preforming up to speed in a classroom environment, then nothing needs to be done. Building confidence in a student’s abilities should be the number one focus of an educator, and utilizing the guidelines set forth in an IEP is a good place to start. Checking in with a student during lessons is a good way to assist, as is providing positive feedback when assignments are handed in on time, graded, and incorporated into a grade point average. When parents contact a teacher for updates, timely communication is essential. Working together, parents and teachers can comfortably oversee the progress a student is making, and can incorporate selectively the elements in an IEP if needed to help the student achieve more than they could without the extra assistance.
Of course classrooms are overcrowded, and time is at a premium within the classroom. But, with understanding and patience, every student has the tools and support required to succeed in life- and in doing so, can build the confidence needed to get more out of life.

Teaching for Tomorrow /teaching-for-tomorrow/ /teaching-for-tomorrow/#respond Tue, 29 Sep 2015 21:35:11 +0000 /?p=174 Maintaining certification as a teacher and educator is probably one of the most annoying and difficult tasks of the career path, but can be beneficial if followed with a sense of usefulness and dedication. While in school, there are many opportunities available to working toward certification, but choosing the ones you are interested in is a sure way of turning the tables on boredom and coming out on top. By paying attention to what opportunities cross your path, and only signing up for the ones with the greatest benefit in conjunction with the time they take up, you can not only check off the boxes on your certification sheet but also come back to your classroom with actual knowledge that will improve your teaching style and help your students.
Read the Material
Understand that the agencies offering professional development that will be applied to your re-certification are for-profit agencies for the most part, and having you sign up for their seminars and retreats is how they make money. When you receive information from these people, read the fine lines for what exactly you are getting for your PD dollars. You may be going off on a wonderful retreat to discuss reading aptitude levels, but you might also only be gaining 2 hours of PD time for a long weekend away. The benefit/cost ratio is nowhere near what it should be in this case, and it will not be worth your time.
The material might instead offer a great number of hours for you to put toward your professional development, but these will be earned by sitting in a classroom for 8 hours a day watching power point slides and listening to a pre-recorded lecturer talk about everything except what you can actually use back in the classroom.
Share the Experience
One sure fire way to get the most out of your PD time is to share the experience with a fellow instructor. This allows you a sounding board for questions and reflection when the certification is over, and someone with whom to commiserate should you not feel the course was all it was cracked up to be. Having a peer in the same boat as you will allow you to also share notes, and to keep you sane when the talking heads start to promote their own products as the solution to the before unrealized difficulties they just told you about – so you would find it beneficial to buy whatever product they are selling.

Finding Teacher Jobs in Your Field of Certification /finding-teacher-jobs-in-your-field-of-certification/ /finding-teacher-jobs-in-your-field-of-certification/#respond Tue, 01 Sep 2015 05:36:13 +0000 /?p=170 With a degree and certification under the belt, it only seems natural in this education job market that a fresh graduate should be able to find a job to their liking. But often this is not the case, as school districts have strict guideline for hiring practices, no matter where a new teacher might apply for a job. Finding teacher jobs in your field of certification might prove difficult, but it’s not because they aren’t out there. It might simply be that you are going about it all wrong.
Finding Teacher Jobs in Your Field of Certification
Rather than go over the wrong ways to locate the job of your dreams, it is best if we focus on the proper ways of seeking reliable and fulfilling employment. Your first resource is your alma mater, where education departments are able to match up newly graduated students with local and national education jobs. These programs have specific lists of positions, and by utilizing these when you have a chance you can locate a job within your field of certification without too much difficulty.
Your next resource is to contact an education headhunter, or if you are graduating from a respectable teaching program, wait for them to contact you. These headhunters have lists of active employment requests from schools, and it is their job to pair up perspective teachers with school districts al across the country. They will interview you to find your specific strengths and help you determine what the best fit will be. They will also facilitate interviews and any other paperwork that is required. As a bonus, headhunters are paid by the schools and not by the teacher clients- if one asks you for money in order to find employment, take this as an indicator of a shady trader, and walk the other direction.
Know Your Strengths
There are several national databases for teachers looking for jobs in your field of certification, just as there are many places where new teacher jobs are posted. Though there are many opportunities on these sites, they aren’t always the most reliable simply because of the amount of resumes and applications they drive. If going this route, be sure to have an eye catching resume, and be prepared to accept an offer fairly quickly if one is offered. There are many applicants coming through these sites, and a school may not need to waste time waiting for your decision.

Interview Techniques for Teaching Jobs /interview-techniques-for-teaching-jobs/ /interview-techniques-for-teaching-jobs/#respond Sun, 12 Jul 2015 00:38:41 +0000 /?p=162 With degree in hand and your teaching certifications neatly photocopied to attach to your curriculum vitae, the job market is yours for the taking. But like many jobs, a successful transition from applicant to employee means passing through a rigorous gamut of interviews. Even the most confident and seasoned interviewee can become disjointed with the myriad of interview styles, so taking a deep breath and preparing yourself beforehand is key to putting your best foot forward when placed in the hot seat. Simply follow these steps to present yourself in the truest and best light, and try and enjoy the process. After all, this is your calling, and your inter viewer only needs to see the real you in order to agree.
Prepare Well Before the Interview Begins
Your college days of rolling out of bed five minutes before a class starts are over, so make sure you hit the pillow early the night before. A refreshed candidate presents themselves as collected and calm, while someone with little sleep can look haggard and disorganized. Also, put together your interview packet the night before and review your resume and curriculum vitae to refresh your memory. You can be sure that many questions will derive from these documents, so don’t get caught unaware with a slight detail your interviewer wished to know more about.
Dress For Success
Again, your college years are behind you, and it is proper to arrive for your interview fifteen minutes early in clean and pressed professional clothes. Don’t wear your scrubs- instead, choose comfortable clothes that demonstrate your caring and thoughtful nature and will not make you stand out from the crowd. If your hair needs a cut beforehand, ensure you do this as well. For men, a close shave or facial hair manicure is in order, and for women, well applied makeup is in order. You wish to present the best of yourself, and looking good is key.
Speak Honestly and Confidently
Even if this is your first job on the nursing floor, you still have the skills that prove you deserve to be there. Answer questions calmly and thoughtfully, taking a pause if you need to in order to collect your thoughts. If you don’t know the answer to a question, be honest and let your interviewer know. Then, follow up with questions that will help you understand the question better. This will demonstrate your ability to learn on your feet and be an asset in a team.
Be yourself, and share with your interviewer your excitement for the position. Your dream job is nearly in reach, and you certainly have the skills to attain your goals.

Organizing Records for Teacher Recertification /organizing-records-for-teacher-recertification/ /organizing-records-for-teacher-recertification/#respond Sat, 06 Jun 2015 04:35:00 +0000 /?p=157 No matter what your current teacher’s certification is, it’s always bound to be up for recertifying around the corner. Though not as complicated a matter as achieving it in the first place, there are certain things you need to have on hand for proof to demonstrate your professional development and time in classroom. Keeping these together through the turmoil of even one school year is a challenge, but if your recertification is every three to five years, you have quite a file conundrum on your hands unless you have a steady and reliable record keeping system.
Keep It Simple
First of all, don’t let yourself be fooled into purchasing the latest teacher-designed software program that guarantees to keep your personal development and certification renewal files in one nifty place. As a teacher, you are well aware the wide spectrum of possible re-certification measures that can be used, so using a pre-programmed software to handle everything is simply ludicrous.
Start with dedicating a file drawer at your home, or in your classroom is absolutely necessary, where you can keep hard copies of everything. This will allow you the peace of mind of having your documents close at hand without the issue of forgetting where you placed that certificate of accomplishment from the state retreat on finding the inner child of your fourth grade students.
Back Up Everything
Once your original files are placed in a safe place, get in the habit of keeping at least two copies on hand, in different places, at all times. This will let you have an emergency copy in case of fire, flood, or what have you, as well as a copy ready to go when you package up your evidence for re-certification. Keeping one copy on hand with your school files in the topteachingjobsistrative offices is a good start, but having another set in a completely different location, such as your parents’ basement, is a better idea.
Take the time in your record keeping to also review for overlapping certifications to get the most mileage out of your training. Often times, a night class in classroom management can also be utilized to cover requirements in communications, peer review workshops, or even technology strengthening.
Your recertification is as important to your career as your 401k, so be sure to treat it with the care and regard it deserves. Losing your paperwork means a lack of proof, and that surely won’t do you any good in the long run.

Effective High School Classroom Management /effective-high-school-classroom-management/ /effective-high-school-classroom-management/#respond Wed, 06 May 2015 19:21:58 +0000 /?p=150 You can tell a seasoned teacher by the look they get in their eye when discussing classroom management of high school students. The panicked look with a forced smile comes from the fresh out of school teacher, while a doleful shake of the head with a grunt might come from a seasoned inner city instructor looking forward toward retirement. The reaction parents and students should expect is a positive, cheery, and emotional response that reinforces the bond between student and teacher.
It doesn’t grow over night, as both sides of the relationship need time to develop and get to know each other. The problem with many teachers today, however, is that they don’t take the time to build that relationship. It comes down to a very simple algorithm- if the kids don’t like their teacher, they won’t learn to their potential. Why should they? Sitting in a class day after day listening to material they are told they must memorize without any indication of how it is important. Without an understanding of the practical application of the material. Without a mentor helping them to grow.
Classroom Engagement
The key to managing a room full of high school aged kids to to dedicate yourself to viewing them as individuals, rather than the common practice of viewing them as statistics, grades, and numbers. By nature, humans wish to improve, and the growth spurts continuing in teenagers is no exception. It’s not a question of forcing your will onto them as a teacher, but rather as experiencing them one on one and recognizing that each student has a distinct personality. What works for one student will not always work for the student sitting next to them.
Start with learning their names. Know not only what their parents call them, but also their friends. Nicknames in a positive voice reinforces comfort and a willingness to engage. Next, take the time to learn what their likes and dislikes are- learn how a topic might be utilized as a tool to help them grasp a concept. The name of the game is thinking outside the box.
Now, with all of this said, the obvious question arises- what if you don’t lke the kid? For whatever reason, you will surely come across teenage personalities that drive you up the wall. The simple answer is that t doesn’t matter. You could have a serious dislike for a kid, but in order for them to learn, you must never let them know. Vent n private, but in order to be an effective teacher, all of your students must believe that you completely enjoy their company each and every day.
